"Deadly Train Collision in Odisha: Coromandel Express Derailment Leads to Disaster"

On June 3, 2023, a devastating train accident occurred in Balasore district, Odisha, India.

The accident involved three trains: the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express, the Yeswanthpur to Howrah train, and a goods train.

Approximately 233 people are feared dead, and over 900 individuals have been injured as a result of the collision.

The accident took place near the Bahanaga Baazar station in Balasore district, about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar, around 7 pm on Friday.

Two coaches of the Yashwantpur-Howrah Express derailed, crossed onto an adjacent track, and collided with the oncoming Coromandel Express, causing the derailment of around 17 bogies.

The derailed coaches of the Coromandel Express also hit the wagons of a goods train involved in the accident.

This train crash is considered one of the deadliest in recent times in India.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered a high-level probe into the incident and announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the deceased, Rs 2 lakh for the grievously injured, and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has mobilized aid and rescue operations and declared a one-day state mourning.

Rescue teams from neighboring districts have been deployed, and the Air Force has been called in to assist in the rescue efforts.

Injured passengers have been taken to various hospitals in Gopalpur, Khantapara, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Soro.

This tragic rail accident is being described as one of the worst in recent times, reminiscent of the 2013 Coramandel Express accident in Jajpur district, Odisha.
